On September 27, Six Degrees Records celebrates the release of Gaudi + Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s ‘Dub Qawwali’ record at Nickies in San Francisco, CA. The DJs performing for the night are Six Degrees president and co-founder Bob Duskis, The Worker (Stateless), and DJ Cyan (Grime City). Songs off the critically acclaimed Dub Qawwali album will be showcased alongside exclusive unreleased remixes. Prepare for a special night of International music across the board from reggae to qawwali to world beat, and global groove.

Dub Qawwali blends the incomparable vocals of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan with traditional instrumentation and a full spectrum of Reggae and Dub elements, Gaudi has sensitively created a set of completely new tracks from a collection of recently discovered and rare studio sessions, recorded in Pakistan in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Dub Qawwali once again brings to life one of the most powerful and moving voices of our time in an exciting new context.

August 16, 2007 marked the 10 Year anniversary of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s passing. Hailed as one of TIME magazine’s “60 Years of Asian Heroes” and dubbed by many as the ‘Elvis of the East’ and the ‘Bob Marley of Pakistan’ these titles are not without foundation; some have claimed he has sold more albums than Elvis, and he has reached as many hearts and souls and crossed as many cultural and spiritual boarders as Bob Marley with his unique mix of poetic eastern spiritual and western musical themes.

Although there have been plentiful remixes and re-workings of the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, none have compared to Gaudi’s original work on Dub Qawwali. National Public Radio (NPR) has featured two stories on Gaudi’s process and reverence in creating Dub Qawwali and highlights the life of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

In 1988 clubs, cafes and bars across the nation began tuning into a track that would help define the next 16 years of British dance music. `Anyone (who had a heart)’, a Bacharach and David cover, done in a style that used the lyrics but resembled little of the original, introduced `Smith and Mighty’ to the U.K. dance culture's consciousness. The tracks heavy synthesized dub bass, tight production, mid-tempo b-drum heavy and sharp snare beat, set off with piano, strings, a couple of well placed samples sat magnificently behind Jackie Jackson’s sublime vocal. This track presented a new mix template for dance music, which had been hinted at by the Wild Bunch’s version of `The Look of Love’ the year before. The duo of Rob Smith and Ray Mighty perfected this style with their own unique vision as they went on to release another instant classic `Walk on By’ (again a Bacharach and David cover), produced a top ten single for Fresh Four (Wishing on a Star), produced Massive Attacks first single (Any Love) and a sublime album for Carlton (The Call is Strong) on London records who had pulled out the check book to sign the act. Smith and Mighty continued to produce, remix and DJ across the world and worked on an album that would not see the light of day due to record company short-sightedness. During this time they worked with Neneh Cherry and Fine Young Cannibals amongst others before they left London in 1994. One 12” they did release before leaving London was the `Steppers Delight EP’, tracks on this anticipated the `Jungle/Drum and Bass’ scene and kept S&M’s reputation riding high. After they left London they set up their own `More Rockers’ label and set the standards even higher with the `Bass is Maternal’ album. Rob and Ray then provided K7 with a DJ kicks album and signed to the German Label for a series of Smith and Mighty albums. With Rob and Peter D Rose also linking up in the drum and bass act More Rockers the 1990s were a hectic and busy period. Rob Smith has now entered a new phase in his recording career and has released his debut `solo’ album on Manchester’s Grand Central Records. `Up on the Downs’ has all the elements of classic Bristolian creativity. You can hear Rob’s many influences from Punk and New-Wave, Reggae and dub to heart wrenching Soul. There are collaborations with a range of vocalists who provide gorgeous compliments to Smiths compositions. Smith has consistently championed the independent, DIY philosophy of punk and has always produced music that speaks to the emotions as well as the dance floor. He is presently writing a second album for Grand Central, DJing all over the world and continuing to produce music of the highest quality.

hey anybody go see filastine and rupture at rickshaw in sf??
i can't believe that was so low-key advertised...??
or was it just that i've been so busy in my own worlds i missd it...

i only got word of it, while i was setting up a gig that same night,
and couldn't go of course.

Hot off the heals of our successful party featuring Stateless stalwarts Roots and Wires Sound Dimensional and the Worker along side SF favorites, Lemonade, and Rio’s Magabo, Chapter two only increases the heat as we move into the spring months.

This time around we have very special guests and Soot Records recording artists DJ Rupture and Filastine.

Barcelona based, DJ Rupture will be bringing his trademark sonic clash of global beats mashed up inna 3-turntable fashion. Audio alchemy through a 21st century filter!

Filastine, in his second performance at a Stateless event, will be dropping his politically charged sounds siphoned through a laptop and stitched together with hip-hop backbone and live percussion. Postworld sonic grit aimed straight at the World Bank’s head!

…And just in case you thought it ended there, Roots and Wires will be playing their trademark blend of original productions and outernational beats from dubstep to UK steppers. Dhamaal is branching out and into new creative ventures with the birth of Surya Dub, the transformation of Worldly into Outer Worldly, and the continuation of the East Coast vibe with Sub Swara.

On behalf of my brothers, I am starting new topic threads here on the Dhamaal website to inform dedicated Dhamaal supporters of what is growing from the seeds that blossomed almost 8 years ago. The cocoon has burst and a trio of butterflies have shaken their wings, grown together and are now exploring their own creative worlds to share with you.

This thread is about Sub Swara, Dhruva's extension of the Dhamaal vibe to the East Coast when he moved to NYC.

Drawing from the most ancient of musical traditions as well as the most forward in bass bomb culture, Sub Swara is one of New Yorks hottest monthly club nights and live electronic crews. At the core of the night lies the Sub Swara Live Set. Comprised of Sub Swara residents, Dhruva (DJ/tabla-ist, producer), Sunder (DJ, turntablist) Haj (DJ/Producer), Juakali (Vocalist) Pictureman (Visual DJ), and DJ Nasha (DJ, Producer), the live set seamlessly combines DJ-ing with live tabla, turntablism, Ragga vocals and visual tweakery. Bringing an organic element of showmanship and musical communication across a slew of genre-crushing beats and bass, the SS crew drops the thunder on the live soundsystem. Look out for the debut album from the Sub Swara crew in the summer of 2007

Worldly began roughly 2 years ago with a big bash of a night that permanently transformed the club 1015 Folsom into a Global Vibe arena. The night was the first of its kind anywhere in SF on such a massive scale. I'll let Janaka cime in, since he's the creator of Worldly, and explain more in detail how Worldly started and what sparked him to do it.
It's come a long way from then. Now I have joined him in promoting the event, after many a night DJing, coordinating dancers and assisting in promotion and production of this massive show.

Worldly will continue as a massive periodic event bringing high profile talent from across the world.

The first Surya Dub took place on January 27. Conceptualized by Dhamaal partner Maneesh the Twister, Surya Dub is the next level in Global Dubwize Vibes and Dread Bass Culture. The goal is to unite all dubwize communities from Roots Reggae to Dubstep and Ragga to Dread Bass Breakbeat and Drum'n'Bass to Bhangra, S. Asian and Global Bass Beat Bizness. Originating from ancient Sanskrit ‘Surya’ means Sun or Solar and with this energy combining with the bass heavy aesthetic of Dub, the new project comes alive. We're made up of a deep and heavy crew of top-ranking selectas and producers

Dhamaal and WORLDLY Planz 2007!

After much deliberation the Dhamaal Collective will no longer be doing shows at Club Six and will no longer perform using the Dhamaal name and logo.

The good news is that OuterWORLDLY will start next year at Club Six as an extension of our massive WORLDLY shows at 1015 Folsom. OuterWORLDLY will happen monthly while WORLDLY (which takes a monumental effort to out on) will sport 3-5 shows in 2007.

I have created a new tribe, myspace and website – this is all very early in the game so content needs to be added but please take a moment and join up – why?

Cos –
OuterWORLDLY will be Cheb I Sabbah and myself joining forces to create a new space for world sounds in SF (and hopefully beyond). Chebiji will be in full swing with his new album around the time of the first show – you will get to hear early versions on the dancefloor. I have loads of new tunes too that I want to test on your bassbins.

Of course -
Sukhawat Ali Khan, Riffat Sultana, Ferhan Qureshi, Rami Ziadeh who have been highlights of WORLDLY will be at Club Six every month.

Fine Art –
Nyomi continues to add her wonderful paintings to the space. The brilliant graphic design and art of Ameet Mehta and Kai-wen will also be front and center.

We miss Skip Intro who recently moved to Philly – but he will be creating content for the shows and Visuals will permeate the space.

Have you read this book?

I have been giving this book as a gift to friends over the years and it seems to resonate with all of them. It is a fable about the struggle to achieve your personal legend - if you feel like you are fighting the odds this book is really worth reading.

I read about the author a little and he has had an incredible and at points physically painful (tortured) life. His life experiences must have given birth to the ideas in this book - sounds like he followed his legend through thick and thin.

Thought I'd post this for those of you who have not read it.

Let me know if you liked it.

What up Peeps -- just wanted to let you know athat I threw up a couple of new tracks on www.myspace.com/dhruvamusic for your listening pleasure.

The first is <<The Balance>> -- produced with Haj and featuring MC Juakali on Vocals, Sunder on Scratches, and JC Lupis on Violin. It's the title track on the upcoming "Freek Factory Vol 1: The Balance". Warrblage for your ear zone.

The second is Yeah! (Ina Dravidian Bomb Step) also featuring Juakali, Sankar Sundaram on flute, Vinyaka on Thapattam (South Indian Frame Drums), and MC Napolean Solo on Beatbox.

More new tracks will be filtering through on a bi-weekly basis and all this stuff will be coming out on various releases over the next several months and also on the Sub Swara album dropping next summer.

hello friends,

thanks to all that came out for filastine's performance last month - it was a truly inspiring set for a comfortably packed house. we will have some photos up soon on the roots and wires website...

this saturday, september 30th, we return with the ninth round of stateless, again at SF's amnesia. for our live act, we are excited to bring you the wailing junktet, performing brazillian rhythms on found junk objects... they were killer at the recent novo sounds event (at the supper club)...

our guest dj is vanka, who hosts the misturada event at club six. here's a blurb that xlr8r's tomas palermo wrote about him:

"DJ Vanka has tapped into a vibe that clubs like Bar Rhumba in London have been promoting for years: organic and electronic Afro-Latin dance music. Vanka's hardly late to the game, though; he DJed for 10 years with Stellar Trax soundsystem, playing everything from reggae to drum 'n' bass. Stalker on tribe, myspace and at events in bay area harassing bellydancers & others

Some of you may have seen this already, but just in case not ... our good friend Tim has posted this on tribe and myspace and I feel the need to make sure Everybody is aware, so Please pass this on where you can.

Aparrently this guy has a history and has had run-ins with choir girls in the past, and is trying to teach middle eastern drumming after openly stating he picked up his first doumbek 6 weeks ago. So who knows where he'll be next.

This is addressed mainly to my wonderful dancer friends here, but is useful for everyone.

Some of you may know that an individual has been haunting Tribe and the Bay Area belly dance scene for the last few months. He has approached and propositioned dozens of dancers both locally, and nationwide (online), upsetting many (including friends of mine), and even scaring a few with his stalker-like behavior.

He finds women's phone numbers, home addresses, emails, etc., and starts contacting them, often repeatedly.

There has been considerable discussion about him on Tribe, with many women coming forward with horror stories about his unwanted attention

This kind of thing really makes my blood boil, and I felt it was necessary to put out a warning, since I have a large number of dancer friends. Please pass this on to everyone, even non-dancers!

Stateless SF @ Amnesia - Fri 6/30/06 - Featuring Micropixie and Jeff Stott!

First off - thanks to everyone that made it out to a packed Amnesia for our last Stateless event. It was a great evening - mad props to Kush Arora for his next-step ragga-bhangra set!

We will be celebrating our six-month anniversary on Friday, June 30, again at Amnesia (b/w 19th and 20th on Valencia, in SF's Mission). We will start at 9 PM and go until 2 AM - the cover is only $5. This should be an extra-special event, as we have two amazing headliners, as well as video artists this time.

First, desi space-alien Micropixie (www.micropixie.com) will be playing her ethereal sounds, with live tabla accompaniment and laptop beats. Then, Jeff Stott, MC Rai producer and founder of Embarka Records (www.embarkarecords.com) , will be performing beats and oud, with a violinist and arabic percussion.

Michael (The Worker) and I (Special Agent K) will be dropping opening and closing sets - spinning roots, dub, bhangra, outernational breaks and jungle, afrojazz, dancehall, dubstep and so on...

I'll be doing my usual soundsystem business, with siren unit and analogue delays. I'm also planning on dropping some dubplates of original south asian dubstep and drum and bass.

Finally, we will be incorporating a visual component. This will include a video piece by Sue C , a photographer and video artist (www.orthlorng.com/sue/live.html) who works with a combination of analog and digital processes, doing "live improvisational video performances using a custom built system in the max/msp/jitter software environment"... We will also be joined by a guest visual artist, Yasi, who is a member of the Flaming Lotus Girls (www.flaminglotus.com) and who will be providing some live visual pieces to complement the evening. The visual element should be a nice addition to our developing event.

I'm still developing my dubwise tabla and midi footcontroller setup, so expect to see this as part of my set in the next few months!

So please come out and join us for an intimate evening of bass frequencies, outernational beats, live performance and visual art!

Dhruva's back in town, joining Janaka Selekta and Maneesh the twister at Dhamaal's home - Club Six, in the Dark Room, Friday June 30. Starting at 9pm and going strong till 3am.

Dhruva is here with the Sub Swara crew from New York, bringing us a killer live set Dj+Tabla+Scratch set with Sunder scratching and Haj on the decks and Dhruva on tabla.

Maneesh the Twister and Janaka Selekta will both be spinning as well.

Kush Arora will be joining us, and i'll be spinning an opening set.

We'll have bellydance performances by Frederique and Haven.

It's going to be a Stellar night with the Dhamaal crew, Sub Swara and Electric Vardo.

Note that the show will be in the Dark Room, Club Six's new room, right next door to the original space.

Dhruva's coming to SF - Dhamaal DJ Reunion - YEAH!

I'm Really excited that Dhruva and the Sub Swara crew will be in town and that I get to host them along with Janaka and Maneesh - Dhamaal Stylee - connecting the coasts (SF & NY).

On June 30th, we're taking over the Dark Room at Club Six for a mix of Brand Spankin new sounds and the familiar Dhamaal stylee with the founding members joining together at their home - Club Six.

In addition to Dhruva, Janaka & Maneesh bringing home the Dhamaal Vibe, i'm looking forward to the Sub Swara Live set.
I was in awe the first time I saw Sunder spinning and scratching live a couple years back at Samadhi, and a few times since then. I'm excited that he'll be back in town joining up, and i'm really excited to hear Haj live. I have yet to hear a live set by Haj, who I know is going to take the house down with Sub Swara partners Sunder & Dhruva.

I'll be spinning an opening set and we'll have a sweet set also by Kush Arora,
plus Spectacular bellydance preformances by my Electric vardo partner Frederique,
and the amazingly wonderful Haven.

Bambaata was throwing parties in the Bronx, before
Prince Whipper Whip was rocking with the Fantastic 5
and before the Rock Steady Crew ever attempted their
first windmills, Umar Bin Hassan and the Last Poets
were making rhythm and poetry live on the streets of
Harlem.
Thirty years later a number of the more socially and
politically conscious emcees are planning a tribute
album to the Last Poets featuring Common, Dead
Prez, Chuck D, Keith Murray, Buckshot, Kanye West,
Erykah Badu and others.
Since 1999, Brooklyn Producer/DJ Dub Gabriel and Last
Poets’s founder Umar Bin Hassan have collaborated in
many ways.
First with Umar’s now legendary appearance on Dub
Gabriel’s Baraka Orchestra album, Then with Dub
Gabriel and Prof. Shehab releasing Umar’s album
produced by Bill Laswell. Gabriel’s Current album
“Bass Jihad” is a modern Middle Eastern Dub
masterpiece being compared by Billboard magazine to
Brian Eno as well as on the best of 2005 list from
many magazines and radio stations from around the
world.
The night will be a celebration of not only the return
meeting of these two artist, but also it will be the
first time Dub Gabriel is in New York since moving to
Berlin Germany 8 months ago.
This legendary night will feature Dub Gabriel\s
Brooklyn Massive soundsystem doing all live dubbing
and music creating. as well as Trumpet maestro Satish
on the dub trumpet and surprise guest!!

HYPER

Hyper (aka Guy Hatfield) is a man with a mission. Heralded as the new breakbeat leader of the pack and the hardest workingman in the UK dance scene, he continues to turn heads and push boundaries to great acclaim. Hyper's pioneering Y3K compilation albums secured his name in the dance scene as one to watch and spawned many copycat breakbeat albums. Worldly was "Out of this World!"

The rain was pouring down outside, but inside 1015 Folsom the energy was anything but gloomy. I couldn't even get through the door before the music set my spirit soaring and my ass-a-shakin'. I wanted to be in all three spaces at the same time--the World Breaks room where the beats were hot and the sweaty bodies even hotter; the packed main room where I was mesmerized by the exotic performances, KK's tabla playing and Janaka on the ones and twos; and the cool Shabaz Live Lounge where the groove was more traditional and laid back. I ended up spending most of my time in the World Breaks room, enjoying a string of DJs who knew how to keep the dance floor moving. RadioHiro and David Starfire kept the energy so high. The breaks were awesome. Unfortunately, it seems I'm getting old because after three hours of non-stop, high-intensity dancing I was spent.

It was an awesome night, and I can't wait for next year! It was well worth the trip up from San Diego!

(The only complaint I have about the event rests with the bar: Three double vodka's in the first hour and I didn't even get a buzz...obviously the booze was a bit too watered down. Next time I'll do my drinking before I go inside.)

Sights & Sounds Festival - Opening night and Groove Garden

It was one of those funky weeks where I was in the bay area for more than my usual three days every other week, which meant missing the Kollektiv San Diego show (and the warmer weather). While I normally would have preferred to be home, I got two real treats for my extended stay.

The first taste of the Dhamaal Sights & Sounds Festival was on 2/Mar, when I BARTed into SF from my NorCal office near the furthest south-easterly station. I'm still an SF novice, but YBCA was conviently easy to locate. When I arrived at the grand lobby things were still in the setup stage so I looked for a place to get something to eat. Here's where being an SF novice turned me in the wrong direction and I spent about 10 blocks walking without seeing anything that was appealing to vegetarian sensibilities. After returning to YBCA the S&S opening event was just getting moving.

The people in attendance were treated to a tabla & MC set, followed by a tabla/MC/DJ set and then capping off the evening just the DJ and MC. The video imagery was varied and unique. I liked some of the lyrical collaborative content provided by the MC, but mostly he provided his voice as an instrument to accompany the inputs from the other two. The venue was a bit awkward, which I think put the audience in a subdued mood, but the crowd continued to grow throughout the event. Even with the venue constraints, the show was enjoyable and well worth the extended BART journey.

I happened to get an email about the Groove Garden 6th anniversary dinner and dance, and being a worshipper of Theobromo Cacao, I needed to attend. I wasn't certain what to expect but I was prepared for whatever happened. The hosts were most gracious, the food was tasty, and the music, graphics and dancing awesome.

Now, I'm really can't wait to hit Worldly on the 24th!!

Anyone else having troubles with dhamaalsf.com and Firefox?

I can get to dhamaalsf.com just fine with IE, but I try to stay away from that program because I prefer FireFox. When I go to the site I get an error that says http://www.dhamaalsf.com/noFlash.htm does not exist. I have Flash player 8.0 installed for FireFox, and can see flash content elsewhere using FireFox without any issues.

Hey all - just wanted to let you know the Dhamaal album release party in Mumbai went off a storm last night.

We'll be posting some pics so so keep a loko out.

Maneesh are also playing New Years Eve in Goa -- playing a big VH1 event so any of you crew that's out in Goa for New Years -- come check us out at 7-10 Pm -- not sure where the gig is off the top but will let you know soon. Should be easy enough to find out anyway.

We've got some studio sessions lined up here in Mumbai so excited ot come back home with some beautiful new material for new Dhamaal trax.

NYE Review - San Diego

Janaka tipped the night off, and it was an instant groove. As the Urban Tribal Dance Company moved their bodies in ways unimaginable to the average person, they were joined by Capoeira dancers to create a fusion that was entertaining as well as technically exciting.

After the dance exposition the crowd merged onto the dance floor and the energy created by Janaka's skills on the one's and two's was explosive. It seemed that Janaka was spinning for only a few minutes before the guard changed, and Karsh Kale took over. The music was great all night long, although the change in DJs brought a greater degree techno with more repetitive beats that was, at least to me, less interesting and less layered than the music that Janaka played to set the dancing into motion.

The venue, the San Diego Museum of Man was a phenomenal location with all the statues, skeletons, molas and other displays. The sound quality under the dome was a bit lacking, particularly during Karsh's turn at the wheels when there was too much distortion due to volume. The accoustics of the venue might have had something to do with the attempt to boost the decibles, though the size of the loudspeakers contributed to the problem. That being said, the volume was LOUD and after three hours of non-stop dancing, the only sound I could hear was the ringing in my ears.

It seemed that "ringing in the new year" was an after-thought to those of us on the dance floor. There was a very brief interlude of about six seconds where we counted down, shouted Happy New Year and then went right back to the most important thing in our lives at that moment--dancing our asses off!

I know that there were a bunch of other shows and demonstrations going on, but since I was dancing the whole time I missed almost everything else.

I hope that Merge Events and the SD Museum of Man found the Dragon Ball to be something worth repeating next year.

Electric Vardo started with DJ Amar, DJ Sep, Ultra Gypsy, & DJ Dragonfly, bringing in the amazing talents of Frederique & Belly Groove, Cheb i Sabbah, Janaka and Dhamaal, Dhol Rhythms Bhangra dance troupe, Turbo Tabla, Sila and the Afrofunk Experience, Tabla Rasa, Kitundu, & many others.

After months running as a primary performer, it seemed best that Frederique join as a promoter. As of October, Frederique came on as an official promoter and joined the Electric Vardo Collective/Family, and together with DJ Sep and Amar, brought in a spectacular performance with Boom Boom Bollywood, Joined by Ultra Gypsy's Jill Parker, Vicki Virk of Dhol Rhythms, and DJ Layla from Portland Oregon.

In November we were joined by Sila and the Afrofunk Experience for a benefit for Kashmir.

Our next show is another benefit for the Kashmir earthquake in Pakistan/India featuring a spectacular lineup with the Nekyia's Kristina Canizares, Clandestine, Embarka Soundsystem feat. Jef Stott & SooozhyQ, & Belly Groove with DJ Amar, plus more special guests.

Smithmonger Bio:

Smithmonger was originally a professional trumpet player who trained at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music before turning his attention to underground dance music. He moved to London 5 years ago and has turned heads with past releases on wicked labels such as Loaded, TCR, 10Kilo, Hooj Choons, and Bushwakka's Oblong.

In the last three years, it's safe to say everyone from Coxy to Boy George has had a Smithmonger tune in their box and Monger has officially made his entry to the big leagues. The year's started off with a massive Breaks release on Boombox in January called 'Hey'. It was caned by the likes of Lee Coombs and Atomic Hooligan. This was followed by a stormer on 10kilo called 'Seen it all Before' which went in with a bullet at No. 1 in DJ Mag's Breaks chart and No. 18 on the UK Cool Cuts Chart. Oblong released 'Get it Oun' in May to huge reactions (Number 3 in Carl Cox's June chart) and Paul has just signed another Tech-House project to Visitor in Belgium. Ministry of Sound released a wicked breaks 12'' in August (No 6 in the breaks chart) and Paul has come on board with Fingerlickin' Records and Signed a 12'' for their new imprint 'VA Breaks'. Called 'Buxom', this debuted at number 7 in the breaks chart. The year is indeed looking good. He's just remixed The Propeller Heads, Rennie Pilgrem and Robert Owins and with numerous DJ dates, the future is bright for Smithmonger.
